Natural Remedies For PCOS

It is an appalling number but recent studies show that 1 in 10 girls in India suffer from PCOD or PCOS. PCOS is an acronym for Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome which is a hormonal imbalance in girls and women. While it is more common in girls and women in the age group of 15-35, the number of incidents in teenage girls is now on the rise. In this article, we will help you understand the issue better and will also list the Natural Remedies For PCOS.

What Is PCOS?

PCOS or polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal condition that affects women who are sexually active. In PCOS, the ovaries produce higher than normal levels of male hormones called androgens which can interfere with normal ovulation and cause a range of symptoms.

Girls and women suffering from PCOS  have symptoms such as -

  • Irregular periods
  • Weight gain
  • Tiredness
  • Unwanted hair growth
  • Infertility
  • Acne
  • Pelvic pain
  • Sleep problems and
  • Mood changes.

Most symptoms begin shortly after puberty and they can also develop during late teens and into early adulthood. Girls with PCOS typically have irregular periods or amenorrhea, and heavy or scanty bleeding. They tend to have elevated levels of the male hormone androgen (testosterone) too.

Foods To Avoid For PCOS

PCOS is usually common in girls who are overweight and have processed food in their diet. Avoiding the following foods will help control weight and have general health benefits too.

  • Avoid sugary drinks like soda, sweetened tea and fruit juice.
  • Limit consumption of red meat like beef and pork to once or twice a week
  • Choose low-fat or non-fat dairy products like skim milk, Greek yoghurt, or low-fat cheese.
  • Avoid refined carbohydrates like white bread, white rice and pasta.
  • Limit alcohol consumption or avoid it altogether.

Which Food Is Good For PCOS?

A healthy and balanced diet is important for managing PCOS symptoms and several foods can benefit women with this condition. Here are some examples:

  • Choose water, unsweetened tea or coffee and sparkling water with a slice of lemon or lime.
  • Opt for plant-based protein sources like tofu, tempeh, beans and lentils.
  • Try non-dairy alternatives like almond, soy or oat milk.
  • Choose whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat bread and pasta and fruits like berries, apples and pears are also good choices.

Exercise For PCOS

An essential part of treating PCOS symptoms is exercise. Engaging in regular physical activities like brisk walking, cycling, swimming, aerobic exercises and yoga can help improve insulin sensitivity, regulate hormone levels, support weight management and reduce stress

Remember to always speak with your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise routine, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.

Destress Yourself

To destress when dealing with PCOS, one can try meditation, yoga, exercise, deep breathing, self-care activities and therapy. Practising these techniques can help reduce stress and anxiety, regulate hormone levels, improve insulin sensitivity and alleviate PCOS symptoms. It is important to find the de-stressing techniques that work best for you and to incorporate them into your daily routine.

Alternate Therapies As Natural Remedies For PCOS

Alternative therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, supplements, massage therapy and mind-body therapies can be used as natural remedies for PCOS. These therapies have been shown to improve menstrual regularity, reduce androgen levels, improve insulin sensitivity and reduce stress levels. But it is always good to have a consulting gynaecologist, who is aware of your condition.

While Western ideas are one path to follow, you could try Eastern ideas like yoga, reiki and Ayurveda.  A healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and good diet and increased awareness of PCOS  will enable a holistic solution to this problem.
